Full Description

[Area TR 338692] Cropmarks (ring ditches & enclosures) (1) There is nothing to be seen on the ground which is under plough. An interesting feature of these photos is that the enclosures are apparently continuous between fields, although there is a difference in height of up to 1.0 m. in field surfaces. The dark circle at TR 3387 6911 is probably the site of a bomb crater.(2) TR 338692. Located to the nearest fifty metres. Cropmarks of Bronze Age barrows. Site no. 38. (3) TR 33836924. Adjoining system of rectilinear enclosures. Two ring ditches at TR 33976923, TR 33836924. Possible barrow site at TR 33886913. (1) (4) Crop marks of barrows are visible here. (5)

The extensive cropmark remains of a probable Roman settlement visible on a number of aerial photographs and mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. the site extends across a number of fields and the western portion has been recorded in the past as a separate site (TR36 NW363). The site comprises a number of conjoined ditched enclosures with traces of internal sub-divisions and enclosures. Traces of external ditches - associated boundaries of a field system extend to the south-east. A number of large pits pepper the site which are probably the cropmark traces of medieval or post medieval extraction. Two ring ditches occur within the site which are likely to be the cropmark remains of Bronze Age round barrows. These have been recorded separately. (7-16)

A small part of this complex was revealed during an archaeological evaluation ahead of the construction of houses off Brook Avenue in 2018. Several of the trenches traced in plan the ditches that formed elements two enclosures, which were shown by pottery evidence and other domestic waste, to be associated with a Late Iron Age to Mid Roman period farmstead. The Roman period features are possibly associated with a focus to the settlement in adjacent fields on the south west side. Other minor features related to the farmstead were also observed. In general, the archaeological features had suffered a high level of truncation from historic cultivation and the features encountered may have been only the remnants of deeper cut features (17)
