Full Description
In 2006/7 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an excavation. A cultivated soil and two storage pits of Anglo-Saxon date were found. These were linked to the foundation of the farm in this area during this period.
Subsequent activity consisted of a boundary ditch dug across the site in the 11th to 13th century. Activity on the site intensified in the late medieval period when the boundary ditch had gone out of use and an open fronted building with an external yard was built on the site. A trackway led from the yard towards the south west, beyond the excavated area. This track was rutted. A fenceline also dated from this period. Three pits were found within the building but their function could not be determined. The building continued in use into the post-medieval period. It was demolished by the 18th century when its fabric was reused to surface the yard. (1)
An archaeological watching brief was also undertaken on this site in 2006/7. Two pits were observed in the south-facing section at the western end of Trench 1. These have been tentatively dated to the mid-late Anglo-Saxon period (c.AD720-875). This is based on their similarity in shape and size to the two storage pits identified in the northern part of the simulataneously running excavation (see above).
In Trench 2 a segment of wall foundation was revealed. The full extent eastwards was not determined but the wall extended west into the excavation area of the site to form a large rectangular-shaped structure. The construction materials and mortar have been identified as dating to the late Medieval period (c.AD1250-1550). Structure possibly associated with the medieval home farm of St. Augustine's Abbey.
