Full Description

A group of three small shallow circular mounds are visible as earthworks on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. The two more northerly mounds measure c.7m in diameter, whilst the southernmost is c.10m in diameter. The mounds appear to have been plough-levelled by the 1960s as Ordnance Survey vertical aerial photographs of this date show them as cropmarks [2]. They are interpreted as hay stack stances, mounds for the drying and storage of hay in the damp environment of a riverside meadow. Similar features have been recorded across the floor of the Stour Valley between Upstreet and the coast and this part of the valley has a particularly dense concentration (see Related Monuments). They appear to represent an integral part of the medieval or post-medieval farming landscape in this area.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].

The three stack stands of Medieval/post Medieval date were visible as earthworks in RAF/82/1006 F62 9 31-AUG-1954. They are later visible as levelled earthworks on Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021. Although interpreted as stack stands for hay, they may have been mounds raised as cattle refuges. They were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (4)
