Monument record TR 35 NW 670 - Stonar Camp, Richborough Port

Summary

A military camp originally constructed in WWI as part of Richborough Port, a major WWI port serving allied troops on the Western Front. Although decommissioned following WWI, the camp buildings were still in existence by WWII when the site appears to have been reused for military purposes with the addition of extra defences to its perimeter. It is not clear whether there are any remaining elements of this facility as the site has been redeveloped on several occasions since the later 20th century.

Amended description following Phase 1 of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey:
A military camp originally constructed in WWI [1]. It appears to have been composed of wooden huts and was part of Richborough Port (MWX43487), a major WWI port serving allied troops on the Western Front. Please see MWX43487 for details of the site as a whole.

Although decommissioned following WWI, the camp buildings were still in existence by WWII when the site appears to have been reused for military purposes [2]. Extra defences (MWX43550) were also added to the perimeter of the site during WWII and are visible on RAF vertical aerial photographs of this date [2]. It is not clear whether there are any remaining elements of this facility as the site has been extensively redeveloped on several occasions since the later 20th century, as visible on recent aerial photography of the site [3].
