Castellated trench system, Run - TR 27456930 - 28206935. (1) photographs (2-29)

An extensive system of zig-zag trenches extending over 1.5km just above the beach at Minnis Bay between Birchington and Plumbpudding Island protecting a low point in the northern coastline of Kent. This is part of an extensive network of trenches which extended along the northern coast of the Isle of Thanet thought to have been dug between 1940 and 1941 for concealed troop movement and observation along the coast.It is not clear how long this system remained in use, but parts of this system of trenches appear to have been abandoned and overlain by barbed wire entanglements across the bay later in the war and parts of the trench system incorporated into anti-landing obstructions for enemy aircraft. The trench system was mapped from aerial photographs - RAF/26J/BR194 VC 37 10-JAN-1941, RAF/106G/UK/1378 FV 7061 04-APR-1946 and Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 05-MAY-2018 as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 (30-32).
